Near Edge versus Flat Edge Print Head

Most thermal transfer printers use a flat edge print head. However, near edge print heads offer several advantages over flat edge print heads. Because the print head is angled rather than flat, near edge print heads can print at a higher speed without sacrificing image quality. Near edge printers are preferred for printing high-quality labels and tags at faster print speeds.

Near Edge Thermal Transfer Printing Advantages

The biggest advantage of the angled printhead used in near edge printers is the dramatically faster printing speeds than traditional flat head thermal transfer printing. Near edge printers generally have a ribbon save feature as well, which can result in significant cost savings over time. In addition, because the near edge printhead floats, it also allows for a wider range of substrate thicknesses.

Choosing a Ribbon Formulation for Your Toshiba Near Edge Barcode Printer

The type of ribbon you use affects the quality and durability of your labels. The two main types of Toshiba Tec near edge ribbons are wax-resin and resin.

• Toshiba Standard Wax/Resin Near Edge Thermal Transfer Ribbon – These ribbons are specifically designed for use within the food packaging industry. A standard wax/resin ribbon provides an image with good smudge, scratch, and UV resistance. Our Toshiba standard wax/resin near edge ribbon is designed for print speeds of up to 32 ips. We recommend using the Toshiba standard wax-resin near edge ribbon with the following label stocks: coated paper, glossy paper, synthetic paper, polyester, polypropylene, and nylon.
• Toshiba Premium Wax/Resin Near Edge Thermal Transfer Ribbon – Our premium wax/resin near edge thermal transfer ribbons are specifically designed for the packaging industry, barcode printing, and flexible packing. These ribbons feature a wax/resin coating on a 4-micron base film, resulting in excellent performance in transfer sensitivity, a high image quality on to various films, high smear and scratch resistance, good UV resistance, and print speeds of up to 30 ips. We recommend using the Toshiba premium wax-resin near edge ribbon with the following label stocks: polyester, polypropylene, nylon, and synthetic papers.
• Toshiba Standard Resin Near Edge Thermal Transfer Ribbon – This standard resin near edge ribbon is designed to print on to polypropylene and polyester films. It is ideal for flexible packing. This ribbon has been coated on to a 4-micron polyester base film, resulting in excellent smudge, scratch, and solvent resistance. This near edge ribbon also offers high peelable adhesive resistance on polypropylene and polyester films. It’s designed for print speeds of up to 12 ips. We recommend using the Toshiba standard resin near edge ribbon with the following label stocks: polyester, polypropylene and nylon films.
• Toshiba Premium Resin Near Edge Thermal Transfer Ribbon – Our premium resin near edge ribbons are designed for printing on polyester and nylon films. This ribbon has been coated on to a 4-micron based film, resulting in excellent smudge, scratch, and solvent resistance. This Toshiba near edge ribbon offers exceptional high peelable adhesive resistance on polyester and nylon films. It’s designed for print speeds up to 16 ips. We recommend using the Toshiba premium resin near ege ribbon with the following label stocks: polyester and nylon.

This near edge printer is ideal for a wide variety of environments and applications including retail stores, distribution centers, food and beverage labeling, manufacturing plants, logistics, shipping and receiving, and more. It features a standard ribbon save feature, which can result in significant cost savings over time. The B-SX8T accepts ribbons on a 1-inch core with widths ranging from from 115 to 224 mm and outside diameters up to 72mm. The max ribbon length is 300 meters. Our Toshiba Tec 300m near edge ribbons are compatible with the Toshiba Tec B-SX8T near edge printer.

• B-SX6T – The Toshiba Tec B-SX6T is a 6-inch near edge industrial printer that accepts 300m ribbons. Its floating print head offers fast print speeds, superior image quality, and automatic thickness adjustment. Its wide printhead is ideal for printing large compliance and warning labels while its easy ribbon loading feature reduces operator training and downtime. Our Toshiba Tec 600m ribbons are compatible with Toshiba Tec B-EX4T1-GS12, B-EX4T1-TS12, B-EX6T1-GS12, and B-EX6T1-TS12 (current models available) and B-SX5T, B-SX4T (discontinued models) near edge printers.

• B-EX4T1 – The Toshiba Tec B-EX4TI is a high performance industrial near edge printer that uses a dual ribbon motor system for better ribbon handling. With its ribbon save feature and high ribbon capacity, the Toshiba Tec B-EX4T1 conserves ribbon, lowers your overall printing costs, and requires minimal intervention. Our Toshiba Tec 600m near edge ribbons are compatible with the Toshiba Tec B-EX4T1 near edge printer.
• B-EX6T – The Toshiba Tec B-EX6T is a 6-inch near edge industrial direct thermal/thermal transfer printer that produces high-quality labels at speeds of up to 12 ips. With its large ribbon and label capacity, the Toshiba Tec B-EX6T can print labels continuously for long periods of time with minimal intervention. • B-SX4T and B-SX5T (discontinued) – Though these two printers have been discontinued, many businesses still use them due to their performance and reliability. These Toshiba Tec printers can print at up to 10 ips for the B-SX4T and up to 8 ips for the B-SX5T. The B-SX4T has an optional ribbon save feature while ribbon save comes standard on the B-SX5T.
